President Trump said Monday that Israel and Iran are moving toward an immediate ceasefire and urged both sides to halt further attacks as negotiators work to finalize a broader peace agreement.
In a Truth Social post, Trump said discussions on a final deal are advancing and warned that only “ignorance or stupidity” could prevent an agreement from being reached. He added that an existing blockade would remain in place until negotiations are completed.
The comments came before Iran’s armed forces announced a suspension of military operations while warning that any new attacks, including in southern Lebanon, would be met with a stronger response.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, whose government has been involved in diplomatic efforts surrounding the conflict, also called for restraint, saying a diplomatic solution appears within reach and urging all parties to avoid actions that could jeopardize ongoing negotiations.
The ceasefire effort faced a setback overnight when Israel launched strikes against military sites in western and central Iran following an Iranian missile attack earlier Sunday. The exchange followed an Israeli operation targeting Hezbollah in Beirut.
The retaliatory strikes came despite Trump urging Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to respond, citing progress in talks aimed at reducing tensions and securing a broader agreement between Israel and Iran.
