Ed Martin, President Trump’s pardon attorney at the Justice Department, told staff Monday he has been directed to investigate clemency granted by Joe Biden in the final days of his presidency, including pardons for family members and commutations for federal death row inmates.
In an internal email obtained by Reuters, Martin said the probe would examine whether Biden was competent at the time and whether others exploited him through the use of AutoPen or other means.
The investigation focuses on preemptive pardons issued to several of Biden’s relatives and the clemency that spared 37 inmates from execution by converting their sentences to life in prison. The email did not specify which family members are under scrutiny or who instructed Martin to launch the inquiry.
