Trump briefed on assassination threats from Iran, campaign says

by | Sep 25, 2024

President Trump was briefed on Tuesday about “real and specific threats” from Iran to assassinate him, according to his campaign. Trump Campaign Communications Director Steven Cheung said the assassination plot is part of Iran’s efforts to “destabilize and sow chaos in the United States.”

“Intelligence officials have identified that these continued and coordinated attacks have heightened in the past few months, and law enforcement officials across all agencies are working to ensure President Trump is protected and the election is free from interference,” Cheung stated.

Cheung continued, “Make no mistake, the terror regime in Iran loves the weakness of Kamala Harris, and is terrified of the strength and resolve of President Trump. He will let nothing stop him or get in his way to fight for the American people and to Make America Great Again.”

A spokesperson for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence confirmed that there was a briefing on Tuesday but declined to provide further details. Meanwhile, Iran’s permanent mission to the United Nations did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

On the same day, the Senate unanimously passed a bill that would extend the same level of protection given to Joe Biden to major presidential candidates, including Trump and Kamala Harris. The bill now awaits Biden's signature, who recently stated that the Secret Service “needs more help.”

Trump's campaign had previously accused Iran of attempting a cyberattack in June, which was later confirmed by U.S. agencies. Intelligence officials have also reported that Iranian actors successfully breached Trump’s campaign and shared non-public documents with Biden campaign associates.

It is believed Trump campaign documents were possibly stolen as recently as last week.

Judd Legum, the author of the political newsletter Popular Information, revealed on Tuesday that “Robert” sent him emails exchanged between Trump’s top advisors spanning from October 2023 to August 2024. He also received an unpublished four-page letter, dated September 15, from a Trump lawyer addressed to three individuals at The New York Times regarding an article.

The recent dates on the letter and emails suggest the Trump campaign is still being hacked, even after federal investigators confirmed the breach and announced they are preparing to bring criminal charges against those responsible.
