Syrian and Israeli Officials Hold U.S.-Brokered Talks in Paris

Syria’s foreign minister met with an Israeli delegation in Paris on Tuesday in a round of talks brokered by the United States.

Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani sat down with Israeli officials to discuss lowering tensions and reviving the 1974 ceasefire agreement. The SANA news agency said the meetings produced “understandings that support stability in the region” and were part of U.S.-led efforts to enhance security and preserve Syria’s territorial integrity.

Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, a close aide to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and U.S. envoy to Syria Tom Barrack joined the discussions. Dermer and al-Shaibani had also met in Azerbaijan late last month and again in Paris the week prior.

A senior Trump administration official told the Associated Press that the U.S. supports “any efforts that will bring lasting stability and peace between Israel and its neighbors,” aligning with President Trump’s vision of “a prosperous Middle East” and a “stable Syria at peace with itself and its neighbors — including Israel.”

During his Paris visit, Barrack also met with Israeli Druze leader Sheikh Muafak Tarif, who urged American help in easing the blockade, delivering humanitarian aid, securing the release of kidnapped Druze, and guaranteeing the community’s safety. Barrack later said their talks focused on “how to bring together the interests of all parties, deescalate tensions, and build understanding.”
