Ryan Routh Convicted in Attempted Assassination of President Trump

by | Sep 23, 2025

Ryan Wesley Routh was found guilty Tuesday on all charges stemming from an attempted assassination plot against President Trump at his West Palm Beach golf club last year.

Prosecutors said Routh set up a sniper position overlooking the sixth hole at Trump International Golf Club on September 15, 2024, and aimed a rifle toward the president before being spotted by a Secret Service agent. He fled but was arrested later that day. Evidence presented at trial included surveillance trips, burner phones, body armor, and a box left with acquaintances containing ammunition, wires, and a letter describing the attack as a failed attempt.

Routh represented himself at trial, calling three witnesses and arguing he never intended to fire. The jury convicted him of attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate, assaulting a federal officer, and three firearms offenses.

A jury in Fort Pierce, Florida, deliberated less than three hours before delivering the verdict. The 59-year-old faces the possibility of life in prison when sentenced.
