Ronna McDaniel, the chair of the Republican National Committee, announced Monday morning in a statement that she will resign next month. Her last day in the position will be March 8th.
“I have decided to step aside at our Spring Training on March 8 in Houston to allow our nominee to select a Chair of their choosing. The RNC has historically undergone change once we have a nominee and it has always been my intention to honor that tradition.”
The move was expected. Trump had recently stated that he preferred Michael Whatley, a little-known veteran and chair of the North Carolina GOP who recently focused on the issue of voter fraud, to succeed McDaniel. Trump's daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, was also selected to co-chair the committee once Drew McKissick steps down alongside McDaniel, as he declared that he would.
Trump needs the 168-member governing body's formal approval before he can change his leadership. RNC members from across the country are expected to back Trump's decision in March.
