The Republican National Committee filed a lawsuit Thursday against the New Jersey Division of Elections for refusing to release records related to voter roll maintenance and election equipment audit logs.
The suit, filed in Mercer County Superior Court, stems from a broader RNC effort to examine how voter registration lists are maintained across the country. In March, the committee sent public records requests to election officials nationwide, including in New Jersey, seeking transparency around voter list procedures and machine seal audit logs.
According to the filing, New Jersey acknowledged the RNC’s request last month but ultimately denied access to sealed audit logs earlier this week. The RNC argues that the requested records are public and that the state is unlawfully withholding them.
“The RNC is taking legal action because the people of New Jersey have a right to know that their elections are being run fairly, securely, and in full compliance with the law,” said RNC Chairman Michael Whatley.
