The Republican National Committee (RNC) filed a federal lawsuit on Sunday challenging several Georgia counties for allowing voters to drop off their mail-in ballots in person ahead of Tuesday’s election. The lawsuit argues that this practice is illegal since early voting concluded on Friday.
The RNC is requesting that a judge prohibit these counties from accepting mail-in ballots over the weekend and on Monday, contending that such actions represent an “unlawful extension” of the voting period. This legal move follows a similar lawsuit that targeted only Fulton County, which a Georgia judge rejected on Saturday.
The new lawsuit names seven Georgia counties: Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb, Gwinnett, Chatham, Clayton, and Clarke. According to the RNC’s complaint, voters in counties where election offices are not open during the weekend are experiencing a violation of “equal protection” because they supposedly have fewer opportunities to submit their ballots compared to those in counties allowing weekend drop-offs.
