Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) team is expanding the use of his AI chatbot Grok within the federal government to process and analyze data, according to three sources cited by Reuters.
One source said DOGE is using a customized version of Grok to prepare reports and analyze information. Two others said DOGE staff encouraged the Department of Homeland Security to use the tool. DHS denied that DOGE had pushed its employees to adopt any specific software. DHS had previously allowed limited use of commercial AI tools under strict guidelines, but in May shut down access after misuse was suspected.
DOGE’s push for AI adoption is reportedly led by Kyle Schutt and 19-year-old Edward Coristine, known online as “Big Balls.” Two sources also claimed DOGE has tried to access DHS emails and train AI to flag disloyalty to President Trump’s agenda, though it’s unknown whether Grok was involved.
The Department of Defense said its DOGE unit has not used Grok for surveillance or network monitoring and noted that all government computers are inherently subject to oversight.
