Republican Arizona Rep. Andy Biggs introduced a bill on Monday aimed at reaffirming the House’s commitment to secure elections by requiring photo identification to ensure that only U.S. citizens can vote.
The Daily Caller was the first to obtain a copy of the proposed legislation, which comes amid ongoing concerns about illegal immigration.
The introduction of the bill follows an announcement by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) that an illegal immigrant agreed to plead guilty to charges of using a U.S. citizen’s identity to vote in multiple elections and fraudulently obtaining an American passport.
“Now more than ever, it is vital that the House takes a strong stance in favor of securing our elections,” Biggs told the Caller. He criticized the Biden administration’s border policies, noting how they have allowed millions of illegal immigrants into the country, and emphasized the need for photo ID to ensure only American citizens participate in U.S. elections. “A photo ID is required to operate a motor vehicle, to purchase alcohol or tobacco, and to apply for welfare — it’s not too much to ask that individuals be required to show their ID to vote.”
Biggs urged House leadership to move the resolution forward as election season approaches, stating that this measure would help restore confidence in the electoral system.
The legislation has garnered support from nine Republican cosponsors, including Reps. Claudia Tenney (NY), Andy Harris (MD), Chuck Edwards (NC), Troy Nehls (TX), Eli Crane (AZ), Dan Bishop (NC), Barry Moore (AL), Diana Harshbarger (TN), and Matt Rosendale (MT).
