President Trump proposes eliminating income tax, replacing with tariffs

by | Jun 14, 2024

On Thursday, President Trump suggested the possibility of implementing an “all tariff policy” that could potentially eliminate income tax in the U.S., according to sources who attended a private meeting with the Republican presidential candidate, CNBC reports.

During the meeting with GOP lawmakers at the Capitol Hill Club in Washington, D.C., Trump also discussed using tariffs to gain negotiating leverage over ‘bad actors’, as confirmed by another attendee.

These statements indicate that Trump, who heavily utilized tariffs as a key component of his foreign policy during his first term, is considering an even more protectionist trade strategy if he wins against Joe Biden in the upcoming election.

Trump's visit to Capitol Hill, where he met with Republican lawmakers and business leaders, was his first return to the area since January 6, 2021.
