Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has named his longtime economic adviser as the next prime minister amid U.S. pressure for Palestinian Authority reform, aligning with Washington's postwar vision for Gaza.
Mohammad Mustafa, a U.S.-educated economist and political independent, is set to lead a technocratic government in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, potentially overseeing Gaza's administration ahead of eventual statehood. However, these plans encounter significant hurdles, including staunch opposition from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict with no foreseeable resolution.
It remains uncertain if installing a new Cabinet headed by an Abbas confidant would satisfy U.S. calls for reform, given the 88-year-old president's continued overarching authority.
Abbas disclosed the appointment via a statement issued by his office.
