by | Apr 9, 2024

Norfolk Southern has reached a $600 million settlement to address class action lawsuits filed following a freight train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, which resulted in the release of toxic chemicals into the community.

The agreement is structured to ‘offer closure and adaptability for members of the settlement class.’ Norfolk Southern stated that individuals and businesses will have the flexibility to utilize the compensation from the settlement in any manner they deem appropriate to mitigate potential repercussions stemming from the derailment.

In a court filing on Tuesday, attorneys representing the plaintiffs indicated their intention to submit a motion for the judge to approve the settlement amount by no later than April 19. The settlement still awaits court approval.
