New York prosecutors announced Tuesday that they will oppose dismissing President-elect Donald Trump’s hush money case, though they are open to delaying sentencing until after he completes his upcoming term.
In a court filing, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office argued that Trump’s return to the presidency does not justify dropping a case that has already been adjudicated. However, prosecutors acknowledged the need to “balance competing constitutional interests” and suggested the possibility of “freezing the case until after he’s out of office.”
Trump was found guilty in May of falsifying business records. He denies any wrongdoing in the matter.
Judge Juan M. Merchan had previously set a deadline for prosecutors to submit their recommendations on how to proceed. The sentencing was originally scheduled for November 26.
