Democrats in New York used their supermajorities to draw district lines on a new congressional map on Wednesday, which would slightly increase their chances of capturing the House majority in November.
Democratic candidates would gain new advantages with the new lines, shifting two significant swing districts to the left.
Representative Brandon Williams, a first-term Republican, is expected to be immediately put in danger in one of those districts, located in Central New York. In 2020, his newly formed district voted by 11.6 percentage points for Biden.
In the other, the map shuffles a few suburban communities to give Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi, who flipped Santos’ seat in a special election this month, a much simpler path to re-election.
The Democrats’ strategy generally displayed an unexpectedly light touch after spending two years and millions of dollars vying for a chance to redraw the map. The state's 26 House districts, which include several Republican-held swing districts, have hardly changed in terms of partisan composition.
