Nancy Pelosi announced Thursday that she will not run for reelection, marking the end of a 40-year congressional career that saw her become the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House.
In a video message posted to social media, Pelosi reflected on her tenure representing San Francisco, calling it “the greatest honor” of her life. “I will not be seeking reelection to Congress,” she said. “With a grateful heart I look forward to my final year of service as your proud representative.”
Pelosi, 85, stepped down from House leadership in early 2023 but chose to remain in Congress in a reduced role, a rare move for a longtime party leader.
President Trump reacted to the news, telling Fox News’ Peter Doocy that her retirement is a great thing for America, calling her “corrupt” and “evil.”
