A grand jury has indicted several Iranians on charges related to hacking Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign. Details about the defendants and the specific charges were not immediately available, but the indictment was secretly approved by the grand jury on Thursday. The Justice Department is expected to announce the charges as early as Friday.
The federal charges stem from an alleged Iranian operation that stole internal communications from the Trump campaign earlier this summer. The stolen materials were reportedly shared with journalists and the Biden campaign before Kamala Harris became the Democratic nominee.
Last month, the Trump campaign acknowledged the breach after internal documents, including a research dossier on Sen. JD Vance, Trump’s running mate, were sent to news outlets from an anonymous email. The campaign blamed Iran for the hack, and a Microsoft report from August 8 revealed that Iranian hackers had sent a spear phishing email to a senior official on a presidential campaign in June.
