Newly elected Canadian Prime Minister-designate Mark Carney has deep connections to the U.S. Democratic establishment, particularly to John Podesta, a longtime political operative who oversaw a $375 billion Biden-era climate fund.
Carney’s connection to Podesta is linked through Gerald Butts, a former top adviser to Justin Trudeau who has been instrumental in shaping Canada’s Liberal Party. Butts, a senior advisor and vice chair at the Eurasia Group, also contributed to Carney’s campaign and works closely with Carney’s wife, Diana Fox Carney, a senior advisor at the firm. Public records show Eurasia Group secured lucrative consulting contracts with the Canadian government under Trudeau’s leadership, though the company insists those deals predate Butts and Fox Carney’s involvement. Despite denials from the Liberal Party, reports suggest Butts and Trudeau’s inner circle played a key role in Carney’s rise.
Podesta’s influence in Canadian politics dates back years. He founded the Center for American Progress (CAP) in 2002, which inspired the creation of Canada 2020, a Liberal-aligned think tank. In 2012, Butts and other close Trudeau advisors attended a CAP event studying Obama’s campaign strategies.
In 2017, a Canada 2020 conference featuring former President Obama also doubled as a fundraiser for Trudeau’s party. And in 2021, Butts and Podesta participated in a virtual panel on U.S.-Canada cooperation on climate policy, co-sponsored by CAP and Canada 2020. The following year, Biden tapped Podesta to manage the controversial $375 billion climate fund.
Carney, a former governor of the Bank of Canada and Bank of England, entered politics with no prior experience but won a decisive victory to lead the Liberal Party. His past connections are now coming under renewed scrutiny, particularly after photos surfaced earlier this year showing him and his wife alongside Ghislaine Maxwell, who was convicted in 2022 for aiding Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking operation.
Carney is set to replace Justin Trudeau, who resigned in January amid historically low approval ratings.
