Julian Assange extradition appeal to be heard next month

by | Jun 11, 2024

Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, will have his appeal against extradition to the United States heard next month, according to court officials in London.

Assange, an Australian citizen aged 52, is contesting extradition to the U.S., where he faces 18 charges primarily under the Espionage Act. These charges are linked to WikiLeaks’ massive release of classified U.S. documents, marking one of the most significant security breaches in U.S. military history.

The High Court in London recently granted Assange permission to appeal, based on his contention that he may not be able to exercise his right to free speech if tried in a U.S. court.

This appeal is scheduled for July 9-10, as confirmed by a spokesperson for Britain’s Judicial Office.
