A federal judge in Washington has ruled that President Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops to Los Angeles during immigration protests violated federal law.
Judge Charles Breyer found that the administration crossed legal limits by sending troops to accompany federal agents on immigration raids. The decision came after California filed suit, arguing the deployment breached laws barring the military from enforcing domestic policy.
Attorneys for the administration countered that the Posse Comitatus Act did not apply, saying the Guard members were mobilized to protect federal officers, not to enforce immigration laws, and that the president acted under separate legal authority.
