IRS Chief Information Officer Resigns Ahead of Tax Deadline

by | Apr 15, 2025

The chief information officer of the Internal Revenue Service, Rajiv Uppal, announced he will resign later this month, according to an internal email viewed by Reuters.

In his email, Uppal said Chief Technology Officer Kaschit Pandya would serve as acting CIO. Pandya has already taken on many of the role’s responsibilities and has been working closely with DOGE over the past two months.

Uppal, who led the IRS’ IT and systems development efforts, said in his message to staff that his resignation would take effect on April 28. “After careful thought, I’ve decided to depart the IRS effective April 28, 2025,” he wrote. “I do understand this is a time of transition for many, and I want to thank you for your steady commitment through it all.”

He did not reference the work of the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, in his resignation. That division, formed under Elon Musk and backed by President Trump’s administration, has been working inside the IRS since February and has gained access to databases containing sensitive taxpayer data. The administration has signaled plans to significantly reduce the IRS workforce as part of a broader restructuring effort.

Uppal’s exit follows a wave of senior-level resignations. Earlier this month, acting IRS head Melanie Krause and several top officials, including the chief risk, privacy, and financial officers, announced they were stepping down. Both Krause and Chief Privacy Officer Kathleen Walters were reportedly concerned about the legality of a data-sharing agreement with the Department of Homeland Security that would allow DHS agents to use IRS information to track migrants.
