Interference in 2024 election will be ‘more complex than ever’: intel officials

by | May 16, 2024

Top U.S. intelligence officials cautioned lawmakers that foreign attempts to influence the upcoming November election are likely to surpass those seen in 2016 and 2020.

Avril Haines, Director of National Intelligence, informed the Senate Intelligence Committee that China, Russia, and Iran present the most significant concerns for election security as the election approaches.

Haines specified that Russia remains the most active foreign threat to U.S. elections. She highlighted that the Russian government's influence operations typically involve undermining trust in American democratic institutions, exacerbating social and political divisions within the United States, and diminishing Western support for Ukraine.

Jen Easterly, Director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, asserted that her agency is well-prepared for anticipated attacks as campaign season reaches its peak at both the federal and state levels in the coming months. She emphasized that “election infrastructure is more secure than ever,” while also acknowledging that the threats facing it are “more complex than ever.”

Officials express heightened concern regarding the utilization of artificial intelligence in content manipulation, enabling the alteration of images, videos, and audio to fabricate messages using any voice or individual's likeness. Avril Haines noted that foreign actors and non-state entities are increasingly employing AI in content creation, much of which is disseminated through social media platforms.
