Hunter Biden’s legal team, led by Abbe Lowell, contends that the special counsel appointed by Joe Biden's Justice Department is fulfilling the objectives of Russian intelligence officials.
In a court filing on Monday, Hunter Biden's attorneys suggested that special counsel David Weiss's pursuit of criminal charges against Hunter Biden aligns with the interests of Russian intelligence.
Biden's legal team is seeking to draw a connection between Weiss's prosecution of Hunter Biden for federal tax and gun charges and the indictment of Alexander Smirnov, a former FBI informant. Smirnov faces charges for making false statements to the FBI, alleging that Hunter and Joe Biden received bribes from a Ukrainian oligarch.
Weiss and his prosecution team disclosed Smirnov's suspected connections to Russian intelligence in a memo last month, advocating for his detention pending trial. Biden's legal team cited this revelation from the special counsel to question the credibility of Weiss's prosecution.
Hunter Biden and his associates predominantly engaged in business dealings with individuals and entities from Ukraine, Russia, China, Kazakhstan, and Romania. U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika highlighted the involvement of foreign companies in Hunter Biden’s guilty plea, which does not reference the Smirnov allegations.
However, Biden's legal team seems to infer that the criminal prosecution stemmed from Smirnov's allegations by indicating that the special counsel's pursuit of Hunter Biden commenced only after the bribery accusations surfaced publicly.
Hunter Biden testified last month and utilized the credibility of the Smirnov indictment to undermine the impeachment inquiry, a contradiction highlighted by Weiss and his team of prosecutors. However, the latest filing from Biden’s legal team did not address their client’s sworn testimony.
