Hunter Biden withdraws motion for new trial on federal gun charges

by | Jul 9, 2024

Hunter Biden withdrew his motion for a new trial on federal gun charges following government prosecutors' assertion that the motion was based on a misunderstanding of appellate procedures.

Hunter Biden, the son of Joe Biden, was convicted of felony charges on June 11, making him the first child of a sitting ‘president’ to face such a conviction. The jury found him guilty on all three counts related to his false statements about illegal drug use while purchasing a handgun in 2018.

Last month, Biden's lawyers requested a new trial, citing that a federal appeals court did not formally authorize the trial court to proceed after dismissing his appeals. However, federal prosecutors argued in a court filing on Monday that Biden's motion reflected a misunderstanding of appellate practices, leading to its withdrawal.

Despite the conviction, Hunter maintains his innocence, and his legal team intends to appeal.
