House votes to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress

by | Jun 12, 2024

Update: House Republicans voted 216-207 on Wednesday to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress due to his refusal to provide subpoenaed audio of Biden’s interview with special counsel Robert Hur.

This formal censure is largely symbolic, as it serves as a referral to the Justice Department, which will determine whether to pursue prosecution. Given that the Justice Department is led by Garland, the likelihood of prosecution is minimal.

The contempt charge stems from Garland's refusal to provide an audio recording of an interview with President Biden conducted by Special Counsel Robert Hur, who was investigating Biden's handling of classified documents.
