House Republicans are pushing for a resolution demanding the removal of U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle following a failed assassination attempt on President Trump.
Representative Nick Langworthy, R-N.Y., introduced the legislation during a hearing where both Republicans and Democrats expressed dissatisfaction with Cheatle's responses. Langworthy criticized Cheatle for the July 13th incident, where a gunman opened fire at Trump's rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, resulting in one death and multiple injuries, including Trump being shot in the ear.
“In our Oversight hearing today, she did nothing but dodge questions and deflect blame. Corey Comperatore is dead because of this failure of the Secret Service. The American people deserve transparency and competence from their leaders, especially those tasked with the critical responsibility of protecting our nation's highest office. She must be fired now,” Langworthy stated.
Demands for Cheatle's resignation have primarily come from Republicans, but some Democrats, including Rep. Brendan Boyle, D-Pa., and Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., have also called for her to step down. Critics argue that Cheatle's leadership failures and lack of transparency justify her removal from the role.
Progressive Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif. called for the director to resign during the hearing, saying, “If you have an assassination attempt on a president or a former president or a candidate, you need to resign.”
