Former CENTCOM commander, Mark Milley to testify over Biden’s Afghanistan withdrawal

by | Mar 19, 2024

Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Mark Milley and retired Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, who served as the CENTCOM commander during the Afghanistan withdrawal, are scheduled to testify before the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Tuesday.

While the pair have previously appeared before Congress to discuss shortcomings in the operation, Republicans speculate that they may have been more reserved in their testimony at that time due to still serving under Biden.

In 2021, Both Milley and McKenzie testified that they had recommended to Biden to retain a small US military presence in Afghanistan rather than pursuing a complete withdrawal. Milley has characterized the operation as a “strategic failure” and has expressed having “lots of regrets” about the situation.
