Defense Dept. announces $400 million security assistance for Ukraine

by | May 10, 2024

The United States revealed a military assistance allocation of $400 million for Ukraine on Friday, marking the third such provision for the country following the recent passage of a national security supplement totaling $61 billion.

This latest aid package comprises Patriot air defense munitions and Stinger anti-aircraft missiles to safeguard Ukraine's airspace and ensure the security of its urban areas.

Following months of Congress deliberation, aid for Ukraine was reinforced with an additional $1 billion package in late April, authorized shortly after Biden signed the national security supplemental bill into law.

This comprehensive support includes equipment such as High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, and 155mm and 105mm artillery rounds. Alongside these provisions, the United States is supplying Javelin missiles, Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles, M113 Armored Personnel Carriers, patrol boats, as well as a range of small arms ammunition, grenades, and demolition munitions.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin also unveiled a $6 billion aid package for Ukraine, stipulating that Kyiv must procure equipment from the defense industrial base prior to delivery.

On Friday, Russia initiated a significant assault in the northeastern Kharkiv region, further intensifying the strain on Ukrainian forces.
