California and Oregon filed a joint lawsuit Sunday in an attempt to block the Trump administration’s plan to send 200 California National Guard troops to Portland, following a judge’s order halting earlier Guard deployments to Oregon that the administration is now appealing.
Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield said 100 California Guard members have already arrived in Oregon, with another 100 preparing to follow, accusing Trump of “abusing his authority” and trying to circumvent the court order.
Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said the troops were reassigned from Los Angeles to Portland to support federal law enforcement and protect federal property. Trump defended the move, saying “Portland is burning to the ground.”
The amended complaint names Trump, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, and the DHS, seeking a new restraining order to block the deployment. Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek said the Department of War has also ordered 400 Texas National Guard members to deploy to Oregon, Illinois, and other states.
