Brazil’s Supreme Court Places Bolsonaro Under House Arrest

by | Aug 4, 2025

Brazil’s Supreme Court on Monday placed former President Jair Bolsonaro under house arrest over an alleged 2022 coup plot and his attempt to seek interference from President Trump, who recently tied new tariffs on Brazil to the witch hunt against him.

Justice Alexandre de Moraes also cited violations of court orders in his decision. He imposed further restrictions, banning Bolsonaro from receiving visitors, except for lawyers and individuals authorized by the court, and from using a cell phone directly or through third parties.

Bolsonaro is accused of conspiring with dozens of allies to subvert the election outcome. His press representative confirmed the house arrest order and the communication restrictions.
