AFL launches numerous investigations following attempt on President Trump’s life; seeks transparency from DHS and USSS

by | Jul 16, 2024

After the attempted assassination of President Trump, the tragic death of Corey Comperatore, and injuries to two other Americans, America First Legal has initiated numerous investigations into the actions of the federal government before, during, and after July 13, 2024.

Congress entrusts the United States Secret Service (USSS) with safeguarding a range of individuals, from current and former Presidents to visiting foreign dignitaries. The USSS, part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), considers protection its utmost priority, with agents dedicating their lives to this mission.

Following the attempt on President Trump's life, reports surfaced suggesting that requests for additional resources by the USSS, including those from its Special Operations Division, may have been denied by DHS and USSS leadership. This raises questions about DHS's resource allocation priorities for protecting all USSS-designated individuals.

The public deserves clarity on whether such resource requests were indeed rejected within DHS. Additionally, it's crucial to understand how DHS prioritizes resources for the safety of USSS protectees, ensuring they receive the best equipment and support available.

AFL has filed numerous Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests as part of its investigation, seeking details such as:

  1. – Confirmation of denied resource requests by the Secret Service from DHS.
  2. – Correspondence from DHS leadership regarding President Trump's Secret Service detail during the Biden administration.
  3. – Records detailing Secret Service operations on July 13, 2024, including staffing levels and any adjustments made.
  4. – Documentation on requests for assistance from other DHS law enforcement components.
  5. – Statistics on DHS personnel dedicated to processing aliens at the Southern border.
  6. – Comprehensive communication records from top DHS officials and key figures at the Department of Justice and FBI on July 13, 2024.
  7. – All available information on the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, from DHS, FBI, and USSS.

The American people deserve transparency regarding the events of this tragic day. AFL remains committed to swiftly obtaining and sharing these records with the public.
